Silver
accumulates within the tissues of the body. This accumulation of silver may
result in a complication referred to as argyria, a grayish or bluish staining
of the skin, conjunctiva (the clear membrane that covers the white part of the
eye), nails, and gums. In '09, the Food and drug administration issued a
warning to buyers about the risk of argyria associated with the use of health
supplements formulated with silver, including colloidal silver.
Argyria is
typically irreversible and may discolor large areas of the body, particularly
those exposed to sunlight. Efforts to reverse the discoloration have in most
cases been not successful, except in instances where only small regions of skin
needed to be treated. Instances of argyria have happened in individuals who
consumed homemade colloidal silver liquids in addition to individuals who used
commercial colloidal silver goods.
Although
argyria is considered the most common undesirable effect of ingesting colloidal
silver, some instances have been reported where colloidal silver might have
resulted in kidney, liver, or nervous system complications. Colloidal silver
may conflict with the body’s absorption of some drugs, for instance certain
prescription antibiotics, thyroxine (used to treat thyroid disorders), and
penicillamine (used to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and metal
poisoning).
